Why does R run in ~500mb of ram?
I am running a very simple R script in command line on a machine with 16GB of ram.

R is using about 4GB of RAM. I assume this is due to the GET() call which is apparently using up almost half of the ram.
Why is this happening? I assumed that if there was any memory leak or a giant amount of RAM to be used up by R, it would crash the machine.

The disk caching is probably the culprit here.
If you're launching your Rscript from the console, you can inspect the R's working directory and see what's in it. If it looks like this:
then you'll see that it's disk caching the GET call's HTTP response.

Weird. I ran your code on a machine with 2GB RAM, and it used around 60MB (0.6% of RAM). I also tried it with java -Xmx2g -jar Rscript.jar and it used ~125MB (1.3% of 01e38acffe

I enjoyed this show. I could see that he and them were a good fit for a military science fiction show. The fan base loved it when it first aired on the Syfy channel and that picked up again when it got aired on television. I am glad that this show got a second season.
One thing that always bothered me was how things were shot. I felt that they weren't really finished and this was just shown at the end of each season. For example, when Galen sent Merrick and the others to the place that the weapon was, there were plenty of shots of the shot up ship that they were in. I thought that this was really a job that should have been shot more realistically.

I watched this show, and it was better than I anticipated. I had heard so much about it, I thought I was going to be bored to death, but it was quite the opposite. The main character, Merrick, is a strong female lead that could easily be played by someone like Jennifer Garner.
I liked that they show us all of the main characters in this one episode.
This wasn't a spoiler, but I loved how they showed how the rebels destroyed the Asura, a ship that was trying to get information on the device that was going to destroy the universe.
I have to say, the action shots looked awful, even though it wasn't supposed to be done realistically. It looked like the ships were all in the shot. Some of the scenes I thought could have been better.
